Jammu, Dec 14: Traffic Police Jammu Range in a major crackdown against life threatening traffic offences challaned, 46,779 vehicles and imposed a fine to the tune of Rs. 81.33 lakh during special drive.
The crackdown started after two weeks of awareness programme conducted by Traffic Police in the month of Sept. 2012 to educate drivers regarding traffic rules.
DIG Traffic Jammu Range, Shakeel Ahmed Beig said that an average of 800 traffic violators are being challaned daily and an amount of Rs.1.35 lakh compound money is being realized from the violators on daily basis in order to curb overloading, over speeding, rash driving, plying two wheelers without crash helmet, overcharging by auto rickshaws, jumping of red lights and wrong parking etc. He said that special drive will now be launched against seat-belt violations from Monday 17-12-2012 as wearing seat belts is the most effective way to protect people in vehicle crashes, so we will be watching closely to make sure everyone is buckling up while driving their vehicles from Monday onwards.
Traffic Police have cracked the whip on its own men( Jawans/officers of J&K, Police) for violating traffic rules. Since the police are the law enforcers, they must set an example. They are more duty-bound to observe traffic rules than the public, he said.
Moreover, in a high level meeting it has been decided that no vehicle will be allowed to enter warehouse straight from Bikram Chowk towards Green Belt crossing and take a U-turn from there on their way to warehouse via Asia Hotel.
