SRINAGAR: Traffic was restored on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, after remaining suspended for several hours due to landslides on Thursday night.
Meanwhile, traffic on the Srinagar-Leh national highway was delayed on Friday due to slippery road conditions following fresh snowfall between Sonmarg and Zojila, a traffic police official said this morning.
Decision to allow traffic on 86-km-long historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, will be taken later as the road remained slippery in the morning and evening hours due to below freezing temperature, he said.
He said traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended last night following landslides at Ramsu. However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, immediately pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to remove the landslides.
Traffic was restored on the highway after several hours. He said light vehicles will ply from both sides, while heavy vehicles will operate from Srinagar to Jammu today.
No heavy vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction on the highway. He said traffic on the Srinagar-Leh national highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir, was delayed on Friday following slippery road condition following fresh snowfall .
”We are allowing one way traffic from Ladakh to Kashmir from very early in the morning. Later, will allow from here to Leh in the afternoon everyday to avoid any accident or traffic jam on Zojila, he said. However, today, traffic was so far not allowed on the highway because of slippery road condition due to below freezing temperature, he said, adding that ”we expect to allow traffic later in the day if weather improves”.
