Sir,
Refer news item ’10 cattle die as live HT wire falls in Leh village’ Sept 3.
This shocking incident underlines the insensitive attitude of the concerned authorities towards public welfare and failure to shoulder professional responsibilities. What a tragedy it would have been had the HT wire fallen on people. Thank God, such an eventuality did not occur.
Most of the times, it has been observed that Government or concerned department does not act unless some untoward incident occurs. One wonders why the concerned departments do not take periodic safety check ups of the infrastructure laid for any purpose.
In the instant case, the electric poles erected sometime in the past had rotten, and needed to be replaced. But no one in the department ever cared to carry out the necessary check-up. Now new poles will be erected, but it is too late. 10 cattle have died in the mishap, and it in turn has caused huge financial loss to owners.
The Government should make it mendatory for agencies to submit safety reports regarding school buildings, bridges, culverts and other public utilities, so that no mishap of this nature occurs in the future.
Yours etc….
