The protracted bureaucratic hurdles that plagued the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) of the Government of Jammu & Kashmir for decades have significantly abated within a short span following the introduction of 54 faceless services. Furthermore, the department’s forward-thinking initiative has substantially reduced the need for in-person visits, greatly enhancing the convenience for citizens, who can now effortlessly access these services from the confines of their homes. Whenever technology is introduced, there invariably arises a milieu of trepidation regarding the eventual ramifications. Furthermore, instances of technological hiccups are often invoked as pretexts for scepticism. Nonetheless, the UT of J&K has effectively debunked these preconceived notions. Within the brief span of two years, the UT has ascended to the top of the list of States and Union Territories about the multitude of online services provided. The fruits of this monumental undertaking are conspicuously evident. From the issuance of minor permits to the adjudication of intricate sanctions, the entirety of these administrative processes has been seamlessly digitised.
The MVD serves as no exception, as the online modus operandi has impeccably streamlined the entire procedure, with the requisite documentation meticulously catalogued and readily accessible. The days of repetitive visits for the submission of documents have been supplanted by a singular submission of the application replete with the necessary documentation, ensuring that it is invariably processed within the stipulated timeframe. This facility has been particularly advantageous for individuals residing in geographically distant locales, affording them the expeditious attainment of approvals, thereby obviating the need for prolonged periods of waiting for the dispatch of documents. The unwavering commitment and concerted efforts of the Chief Secretary and other Government officials have been pivotal in facilitating this transformative transition. It is anticipated that a myriad of additional approvals and services will follow as time progresses. The ultimate aspirations of a corruption-free, paperless, queue-less bureaucratic system and the delivery of services directly to the doorsteps of the citizenry represent the apotheosis of this laudable endeavour.
