Transforming Agricultural Infrastructure

The approval of agriculture and allied sector projects worth Rs. 117.58 crore for Jammu and Kashmir marks a transformative step in the region’s agricultural and rural landscape. These projects signify a monumental effort to modernise infrastructure, enhance productivity, and empower the farming community. A comprehensive strategy that addresses critical gaps in agricultural and allied sectors has been made. The sanctioned projects include 12 significant ventures in the animal husbandry sector, involving the construction and upgrading of 11 veterinary hospitals and one training institute, with a substantial budget allocation. This investment is poised to provide state-of-the-art veterinary care and skill development facilities, ensuring better health and productivity for livestock, a vital component of rural livelihoods. In tandem, the agriculture sector will benefit from substantial infrastructural development at SKUAST in both Jammu and Kashmir. With a sanctioned budget of Rs 3051.65 lakh, these initiatives include the construction of modern hostels and facilities that will enhance academic and practical training for future agricultural professionals. Such forward-looking investments will equip the region with the expertise needed to adopt innovative farming techniques and sustainable practices.
Another major highlight is the Command Area Development and Water Management initiative. Fourteen projects, with a collective budget of Rs. 4639.31 lakh, will focus on irrigation efficiency and rejuvenation of field channels. These projects aim to optimise natural water sources and rehabilitate existing irrigation systems, addressing long-standing issues of water scarcity and inefficient irrigation in districts like Kathua, Baramulla, Kulgam, and Pulwama. These measures promise to enhance agricultural yields and promote sustainable water management practices. This focused approach to these projects ensures the simultaneous development of infrastructure, training facilities, and resource management systems. As these projects take shape, their impact will resonate across the UT, creating a ripple effect that benefits the economy, improves livelihoods, and ensures food security.
