JAMMU, Aug 1: Seven days Translators’ orientation programme for Knowledge Text Translation into Dogri, was inaugurated by Jammu University Vice-Chancellor Prof R D Sharma, here today.
Prof Lalit Magotra, Convener, Board of Studies in Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, was the key-note speaker of the function and explained the meaning of translation. “Translation does not mean translation of words. Real translation is that of meaning. and translation of meaning implies invoking the effect which has been the intent of the writer of original work,” he explained and added that to transport that effect from one language to another was not an easy task. He also stressed the importance of translation in a multilingual and multi-cultured country.
Prof R D Sharma, in his address, assured his full support in the organizing such type of programmes in future also. He stressed upon the participants to make a habit of learning different languages to gain knowledge and further exhorted upon the participants to make the best out of such type of workshops.
Prof. Kedar Nath Sharma, Dean Faculty of Arts, JU, also spoke on the occasion. He shared his experience of teaching at Thailand with the participants of the programme.
Sunil Choudhary from NTM, CIIL, Mysore presented detailed aims and objectives of NTM and Translators’ Orientation Programme through a power point presentation.
Earlier in her welcome address, Prof Parmeshwari Sharma, HoD Dogri, highlighted importance and relevance of the programme.
Prof Shiv Dev Singh Manhas conducted the proceeding of the programme whereas Dr Sushma Sharma presented vote of thanks.
A large number of faculty members of Languages Department including Prof Archana Kesar, Prof Ramnika Jalali, Prof Sucheta Pathania, Dr Riaz, Dr Monika Sethi, Dr Garima, Dr Balji Kour were also present on this occasion.
Around 55 scholars and faculty members are participating in this Translators’ Orientation programme.
