JAMMU, Nov 9: The Transport Department today conducted extensive checks on the major roads, particularly along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, targeting a wide range of traffic offences.
Supervised by the Transport Commissioner Bhawani Rakwal, the Department set up checkpoints to address various issues, such as overloading, route permit violations, Registration Certificate (RC) lapses, and other traffic breaches.
Nearly, 1240 vehicles, including busses, tippers, school busses, mini-busses, and private vehicles, were inspected for various violations during the drive.
As a result, 598 vehicles were fined for offences, such as driving without helmets, pollution certificates, and seat belts, as well as overloading, over-speeding, lack of fitness certificates, and dangerous driving.
A Transport Department official said that key violations were noted under sections 194D (without helmet), 190(ii) (without pollution certificate), 179 (disobedience), 194B (without seat belt), and 184 (dangerous driving), among others.
He said the intensified enforcement drive led to the collection of Rs 19.26 lakh in fines from the violators.
According to him, RTO Jammu Pankaj Bhagotra supervised the operation, with assistance of ARTOs and other officials from across the Jammu division.
