JAMMU, Feb 22: The transporters of all the commercial vehicles in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are going on indefinite strike from February 24, 2021.
Addressing a joint press conference here today, senior members of All J&K Transport Welfare Association including Vijay Singh Chib, Kuldeep Singh, Mohinder Singh and others, said that annoyed over the attitude of the State Administration, they have been forced to announce total `Chakka Jam’ strike through out J&K from Feb 24.
They said the Association also held meeting with their counterparts in Kashmir valley and they have also given their full consent to join this strike. After joint meeting on Feb 20, it was unanimously decided that all the transport vehicles will remain off the road from coming Wednesday, till the demands of the transporters are addressed, they added.
All type of commercial vehicles including buses, trucks, tankers, mini-buses, Sumos/ Taxies/ Tempo-Travelers, Auto-rikshaws etc. shall remain off the road from Lakhanpur (Punjab border) to Uri in Kashmir for indefinite period. Government will be responsible for inconvenience to the general public, they maintained.
They further claimed that Association was demanding revision of passenger fare and waive off Token/ Passenger tax during the lock down period of one year. The transporters had observed one day token strike on January 6, 2021 and Govt during meeting had assured to resolve their issues within one week. But they only gave false assurances. No body took pains to solve issue.
They pointed out that prices of diesel and petrol have crossed all the previous records and under such circumstances operation cost of the vehicles has also increased manifold . Collection of tax at Toll Plazas in J&K is also very high. The Govt must abolish the same or reduce the tax money. The Govt is not considering fact of rising prices of diesel and petrol and forcing transporters to go for agitation. Despite solving their issues, they have adopted attitude of neglect, the Association members maintained.
