JAMMU, Apr 7: Transporters of Jammu and Kashmir today held protest demonstration at General Bus Stand and at KC Crossing to express their resentment against the National Highway Authority of India for charging heavy sum of money from passenger transport vehicles on the name of Toll Tax at Ban Talab Nagrota.
The transporters of the State in a meeting under the chairmanship of Sardar T S Wazir (Chairman All J&K Transport Welfare Association), expressed resentment over levying of hefty charges from all commercial vehicles at Toll Plaza Ban Talab and threatened to go on strike if the same fee was not withdrawn immediately.
Representatives of all Passenger Transport Associations who participated in the meeting stated that transporters of Jammu and Kashmir were already paying huge taxes and fees to the State and Central Government and finding it hard to run their business in view of several constraints.
They said further that extension of Railway train and plying of DMU between Jammu and Katra has already ruined their trade and their woes were further compounded with natural calamities and developments on the borders, which all together were hampering their normal activities. They added that things have further compounded with levying of fee by National Highway Authority of India which has started charging Rs 375 per bus, per trip and Rs 200 per minibus and the like that to when the NH1A is incomplete and thus the said tax unjustified.
