LEH, May 29: On the assurance of District Administration to hold talk with All Transport Cooperative Society and Tourism stakeholders to sort out various issues related to outsider operating commercial vehicles in inner areas as well as Army supply contract with local suppliers the Chakka Jam strike planned for May 31 has been postponed till further announcement.
This was stated by the Ladakh Tourist Trade alliance Chairman PT Kunzang while addressing a press conference at Press Club Leh office today.
Claiming the support of all the major political parties and religious organizations All Transport Cooperative Society and Tourism stakeholders of Leh District in one voice said that they will not allow any non-locals be they transporters, hoteliers or any business related to Tourism or Army to operate in Ladakh as entire Ladakh’s economy depends on these two and if big business venture comes to Ladakh then where will the locals go said Kunzang. He added that this issue is not restricted to few transporters or Tour operators but entire Ladakh economy is heavily dependent on Tourism and Army. He added that outsider investors are trying to snatch the business of locals from time to time with various methods. He alleged that local suppliers have been fulfilling the Army supply requirement professionally without any problems but now army has not renewed the supply contract with local supplier since three month and thousand of transporters are without any work since months. He added transporters decided to raise their issue with administration and even planed to observe Chakka Jam strike on 31 May but on the assurance of District Administration they decided to postpone it.
He added that locals have no problem with outsiders coming upto Leh with their own conveyance but from here preferences should be given to locals having more knowledge about inner areas of Ladakh, asserted Kunzang.
President All Ladakh Tours Operators Association Deleks Namgyal, Chairman Ladakh Taxi Operators Cooperative Limited Angchuk Shali, President Hotel Association Tashi Motup Kao, President Ladakh Transport Cooperative Union Mohd Shafi Lasu, President Bikers Association Tashi Chhotak and representative from Tempo Travelers Association present on the occasion showed solidarity with the stand they have taken to safeguard the interest of local economy.
