Tree talk organised

JAMMU, Apr 11: A weekend tree talk was hosted for women morning walkers and scholars in Zanana Park Jammu which focused on new revelations on trees and tree products in the backdrop of climate change, emergence of new bacteria viruses and fungal pathogens and eco-friendly ways to boost body immunity and fight human ailments.
While taking a round in the park, Botanist Madhu Bhagat shared that unique marsh aromatic plant called  Nach or Bariyaan or sweetflag is used in perfumery industry, dried powdered rhizomes is used as substitute of ginger, cinnamon or nutmeg, once used by Europeans to flavour wine, plant extensively traded, diploid, triploid and hexaploid populations stand explored for phytochemicals.
Purnima Gandotra, Floriculture Officer told that Vitex negundo oil  useful in skin ailments, arthritis, liver complaints is useful in mosquito control, elders popularized as twigs use in cultural traditions by declaring it mandatory to have its branches hung at dopors and windows to keep evil spirits and mosquitoes away during monsoon days.
Anil Gaid shared that Maulsari tree is unique tree introduced by Dogra rulers in Jammu suburbs like Nagbani, Circuit House, Zanana Park, Mubarak Mandi and SMGS Hospital as shady tree, its flowers are used in fragrant garland making, for worship in temples, fruit used in delivery, flower powder as brain tonic and bark extract useful in bleeding gums, bad breath, pyrrhoea, lose teeth etc.
Sunit Singh Chauhan, Vasudev Sharma, Om Dalmotra and, S Manjit Singh presented folk Dogri and Bhaderwahi songs in praise of spring splendor and blooming trees of Shivaliks.
