‘Tree Talk’ organized on upcoming CUJ campus

JAMMU, Feb 18: The Department of Environmental Sciences, Central University of Jammu, organized “Tree Talk”- the first ever function in the wilderness of its upcoming Campus at Bagla in  Samba district.
Dr  O P  Sharma Vidhyarathi, Chief Conservator of Forests, was the chief guest while Prof  Devanand, VC Central University,  presided over the function.
Dr  Sharma highlighted the importance of trees and explained   how these were useful in several ways for the survival of mankind. He revealed that Tree Talk was the nick name for Natural Heritage interpretation, which was launched by United Nations in December, 2010, the year which was declared as the World Biodiversity Year. The basic spirit of Tree Talk is to talk about plants– may these be trees, shrubs, herbs, grasses, fruit trees or any other type of the plant diversity.
Prof  Devanand highlighted the importance of trees as they produce oxygen, which is required for respiration of all living organisms and consume carbon dioxide. He appealed to all present to protect and conserve our biodiversity for posterity.
Prof  H S  Sehgal, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, CUJ, explained the role of trees in keeping environmental and ecological balance.
The function was attended by Prof  MK  Jyoti, former Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, CUJ;  Gurdip Singh, Chief of NGO, Savera;  Dr  C M  Seth, Chief World Wildlife Fund (J&K);  Jit Singh, Registrar and others.
Later, a poster on Ghrana Wetland, prepared by Dr  C M  Seth, was released on this occasion. This was followed by a walk around the campus terrains covered by green vegetation where Dr Sharma explained characteristics of trees to the students of Environmental Sciences.
