SRINAGAR, Feb 5: An earthquake of moderate intensity shook Kashmir today but no loss of life or damage to property has so far been reported from anywhere.
As per details from National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake was 5.7 in magnitude on Richter scale and its epicentre was at a depth of 181 kilometres Afghanistan-Tajikistan Border Region.
Its latitude was 36.34 degrees north and longitude 71.05 degrees east, a Meteorological Department official said, quoting details from NCS New Delhi.
The earthquake which occurred around 9:47 am lasted for a few seconds and caused panic among the people, most of whom rushed outside their house for safety. People called family and enquired about their safety.
Due to the strong tremors, the Minaret of Sheikh Ul Alam (Nooruddin Wali’s) Chrar-e-Sharief tomb tilted, administrator Waqf board Chrar-e-Sharief said.
Management of the Sheikh Nooruddin Wali’s shrine said that besides the tilting, there was no apparent damage to the main building.
“The crown at the minaret of the shrine got tilted and lost its original shape due to the strong tremors felt across Kashmir. However, there is no major damage to the shrine and everything is being inspected from the inner and outer side,” he added.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to enquire about the situation in the Union Territory following the earthquake.
