JAMMU, Jan 31: Maintaining that the Tribal status granted to Gujjars and Bakerwals in 1991 during Governor rule has played a key role in identity formation and overall development of both the tribes, the speakers of a programme organized by Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation pleaded for preservation and documentation of centuries old socio-cultural, behavioural, linguistic, ritualistic and primordial traits of J&K Tribes.
They said that the State Government should step in to provide rights to safeguards their socio-cultural and economic setup, which is surviving since centuries.
Dr Javaid Rahi, secretary Tribal Foundation said that culture is a powerful tool to highlight the vibrant ethnicity of Tribes especially Gujjars and Bakerwals and there is need to document this old heritage immediately before it got vanished for all.
Others who spoke, include Ch Ahmed Din Poswal, Ch Hamid Khatana, Haq Nawaz Bokan, Ch Hasan Din, Mehmmod Ali Chouhan, Karamat Hussain, Tajamal Hussain and Talib Hassain.
