JAMMU, Oct 4: Floral tribute were paid to the first martyrs of India’s Freedom struggle, Subedar Jai Mangal Pandey and Subedar Nadir Ali Shah on their Martyrdom day at Rehari Chungi in Jammu today.
The people from all walks of life led by VBKP National treasurer Prem Sharma, J&K Unit members Ramesh Kashyap, Gopal Sharma and others paid glowing tribute to the Shaheed Jai Mangal Pandey and Nadir Ali Shah who had revolted against the British Army and killed at least 55 English soldiers at Chapra Chawani, now in Jharkhand on October 2, 1857.
They had raised revolt against the atrocities of the Britishers against the Indians. The British Government hanged these great Freedom fighters on October 4, 1857 along with 157 other soldiers at the banks of a large pond at Chapra village. It was followed by the war of Indian Independence of 1857 which started from Meerut in Utter Pradesh.
The speakers during the function urged upon the LG’s Administration and Jammu Mayor Rajinder Sharma to install a statue of great freedom fighter- Shaheed Jai Mangal Pandey at one of the crossings in Jammu City.
