Beside her stood Deepak Sharma’s parents, who were equally inconsolable and cursing their fate. With trembling hands and hearts burdened by the weight of loss, they joined their daughter-in-law in the solemn tribute to their fallen son— whose unwavering dedication to duty had forever altered the course of their lives.
Probationer Sub-Inspector Deepak Sharma (32), who hailed from Sangoor village in Udhampur district and was posted at the Ramgarh Police Station in Samba district, lost his life in an encounter with gangsters inside Government Medical College Hospital Kathua premises late Tuesday night. During the encounter, he sustained head injuries which proved fatal. A wanted criminal, Vasudev, who headed ‘Shannu gang’ was killed while a Special Police Officer (SPO) also sustained injuries in the gunfight.
As the body of the martyr officer was brought to the District Police Lines, Director General of J&K Police, R R Swain joined other ranks to lay wreath at the coffin. The wreath laying ceremony was attended by parents and wife of the slain officer. Emotional scenes were witnessed as police bid adieu to the officer.
While the family members and newly married wife of slain PSI were inconsolable over the loss, DGP Swain pledged to put an end to criminal activities in the Union Territory.
“Jammu Police has taken its fight against narcotics and gangsters to a new level in the recent past…We will go at it hammer and tongs to finish the menace as attempts are being made to set up a Punjab-type criminal syndicate,” Swain told reporters. He said the sacrifice of the officer will not be allowed to go in vain and the force will intensify its drive against narcotics and gangsters.
“A strategy is being chalked out and we will get to its roots. They (criminals) are getting involved in land deals, narcotics, bovine smuggling to encash on the growing economic activities in the region where development has been taken to a different level with setting up of industries, AIIMS and educational institutions,” he said.
The DGP said criminals earlier avoided any direct confrontation with the uniformed personnel. “The incident shows that they have become more daring and dangerous with weapons. Our meaningful and purposeful action against them will be stronger than earlier,” he said.
ADGP Vijay Kumar, ADGP Jammu Anand Jain, DIG JSK Range Dr Sunil Gupta and other jurisdictional officers laid floral wreaths.
