Diwan Todar Mal played a pivotal role in acquiring what became the world’s most expensive land for the cremation of the Chote Sahibzade – the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh – and their grandmother, Mata Gujar Kour ji, at Fatehgarh Sahib in Sirhind. In the late 17th century, during harrowing times, the Mughal governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan, unjustly bricked alive the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh – Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh . The heart-wrenching incident unfolded at the historic site of Fatehgarh Sahib, where Bab Fateh Singh and Baba Zorawar Singh, aged 7 and 9, were given the choice to convert to Islam or face death. Displaying immense courage, both chose martyrdom over renouncing their faith.
Diwan Todar Mal, a wealthy merchant, deeply moved by these tragic events, resolved to ensure a dignified and honorable cremation for the martyred sons and their grandmother. Recognizing the sanctity of the sacred event, Todar Mal sought to purchase the land from Wazir Khan. However, Wazir Khan made a strange demand – the value of the land would be determined by the number of gold coins laid on the required cremation area. Reflecting unwavering determination, Todar Mal procured the required gold coins.
The plot thickened when Wazir Khan altered his condition. Instead of spreading the gold coins horizontally, Todar Mal was instructed to place them vertically, requiring 78,000 coins to cover four yards of land. Undeterred by the increased demand, Todar Mal managed to gather additional gold coins. At that time, the cost of 78,000 gold coins was 2 billion 50 crore rupees, making it the most expensive land purchase to date for such a small area.
Todar Mal’s contribution extends beyond material acquisition; it underscores values of selflessness, compassion, and devotion embedded in Sikh teachings. In ensuring a proper resting place for the martyrs, Todar Mal paid homage to Guru Gobind Singh and Mata Gujri, demonstrating the timeless Sikh ethos of standing against injustice and upholding the sanctity of religious principles.
