Tributes paid to Bharat Rattan Bhimsen Joshi

JAMMU, Feb 4:  Bharat Rattan Bhim Sen Joshi’s Jammu connection recapped in detail by his disciple B S  Bali, during a programme to commemorate legendary vocalist’s 94th birth anniversary, at the K L Saigal Hall, here today, came out as a befitting tribute to the legendary classical singer who through his bhajans and songs like ‘mile sur mera tumhara’ was familiar even to the musically illiterate.
Organized by Radio Kashmir Jammu (RKJ), in collaboration with J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, today’s program ‘Yadein, Remembering Bharat Rattan Pandit Bhim Sen Joshi’, came out as a significant event as it not only reiterated the rich legacy of classical music in the winter capital but also brought focus on Bhim Sen Joshi’s disciple B S Bali, the leading vocalist in Jammu and former Principal, Institute of Music & Fine Arts, Jammu, who is continuing the classical music tradition through ‘guru shishya prampara’.
Today’s program B S Bali in accompaniment of his disciple Vijay Singh Sambyal, a vocalist of great promise and Station Director RKJ, reminisced about his experience as a ‘shishya’ of Pandit Bhim Sen Joshi (February 4,1922 – January 24, 2011). He spoke in detail his guru’s simple and saintly life style, creative genius and versatility and his memorable visits to Bali Family house in Kachi Chowni, Jammu, where he also sang in informal ‘baithaks’.
B S Bali, presented selected compositions by his ‘guru’, a luminary of ‘Kirana Gharana’, and expert in ‘khayal gayaki’ whose extraordinarily rich and sonorous voice and ruled the musical world for over four decades. B S Bali, sang some of the compositions by his ‘guru’ in Raag Yaman Kalyan, Raag Todi, Kalashree and Bhariavi.
The artistes who gave accompaniment included Parshotam Kumar on tabla, Suraj Singh on Harmonium and Pankaj Pradhan and Pinka, daughter of B S Bali on tanpura.
Additional Secretary, Cultural Academy, Arvinder Singh Amn’s offer to hold monthly concerts to promote classical music was appreciated by the audience which included singers, musicians, performing artistes and members of the civil society. Today’s program was conducted by Anjana Badyal.
