JAMMU, Jan 30: On 65th martyrdom day of Mahatma Gandhi, rich tributes were paid to the Father of Nation during simple functions in this regard by several political and social organizations, here today.
Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) organized a tribute paying function at the party headquarters. The function was presided over senior vice president PCC Dharampal Sharma and attended by senior leaders who stressed that the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi was becoming more relevant with every passing day. They also threw light on contribution of the Mahatma towards maintaining peace and non-violence.
Prominent among those, who spoke on the occasion, included S Gurmukh Singh, Ravinder Sharma-MLC, president DCC Jammu Urban Om Chopra Kuldip Raj Verma-Vice Chairman OBC Board, Mehrajuddin Zargar, Indu Pawar, D.S.Langeh, K. L. Gupta, Mohammad Abdullah Nadaf, S.R. Sudhir and Com. Jaswant Singh.
On the occasion, two minutes silence was observed and the Mahatma’s most favourite Bhajan “Raghupati Rag Viraza Ram,” was also chanted by the Congress members.
Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand paid floral tributes to the Father of Nation at a function, organised by Gandhi Global Family (GGF), here today at Dewan-e-aam, Mubarak Mandi complex.
A large number of students from Government and private educational institutions, senior civil and police officers, prominent citizens and GGF members also paid respect to the Father of Nation at the function. On the occasion, school children recited bhajans and spun the Charkha.
In his address, Deputy Chief Minister informed that a two day summit is being organized by Gandhi Global Family at Cuttack and Bhubneshwar, Orissa where thousands of Gandhians from within and outside the country are participating.
Prominent among those who paid tributes to Gandhi were IGP Jammu, Dilbagh Singh, Director School Education, Dev Lata, Director Health Services, Madhu Khullar, Medical Superintendent Gandhi Nagar Hospital, Dr. Romesh Gupta, secretary general Press Club Jammu, Sohail Kazmi, president Bharat Scouts and Guides J&K, I.D. Sony, Wg Cdr, M.M. Joshi, vice president, Gandhi Global Family, Shakuntla Joshi and others.
Minister for Housing, Horticulture and Culture Raman Bhalla also paid rich tributes to the Father of the Nation at a function organized by the ‘Mahatma Gandhi Intellectual Society’, Jammu Cantt at Mahatma Gandhi Chowk, Satwari.
A number of personalities from different walks of life attended the function and paid tributes in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Bhalla described Mahatma Gandhi an apostle of peace and the real architect of freedom movement of India.
Gandhian Studies Centre of Government M.A.M. College, Jammu paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi to mark Martyrs Day. The programme commenced with the lighting of the traditional lamp by Dr.Ramesh Chander, the college Principal. This was followed by a two minute silence in honour of the Father of the Nation. The programme was attended by the college faculty and students. Dr Twinkle Suri, Director, Gandhian Studies Centre Prof. Banpreet Kour, Prof Kailash Mehra, Prof. S. C. Sharma, Prof. Anoop Kumar, Prof. Liaqat Ali and Prof. Shujat Khan were also present on the occasion.
Sacred Heart College of Education paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi. M.D of the college Hari Singh Chib remembered the Mahatma’s contribution, and his struggle for Indian freedom. Principal of the college Dr. K.K. Tiwari called Gandhi Ji the soul of Indian freedom. Some students and staff members also spoke on the occasion.
Happy Model School and Shivalik College also paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation on his death anniversary. The students and staff of the college as well as school assembled at the Mahatma Gandhi grounds of the institute and observed a two-minute silence at 11 AM. It was followed by singing of Bhajans and patriotic songs.
Earlier the students took a pledge to work for communal harmony and strengthening tolerance, compassion, love for all humans. The Principal Dr Vikram Gulati threw light on principles and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.
To commemorate the day, a programme was organized by J&K Gandhi Smark Nidhi and J&K OBC Forum at Excellency College, Mohalla Kachi Chowni. Dr Karuna Bajaj highlighted the achievements of Mahatma Gandhi and his contribution towards maintaining peace, truth and non-violence. Dr Raj Kumar Choudhary, president of J&K OBC Forum, Goverdhan Bali, Kuldeep Raj Chalotra, Sham Lal Gandhi, Sanjeev Sayal, Mukesh Verma and others also spoke on the occasion.
Khadi Gram Mandal Jammu organized a prayer meeting to pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his martyrdom day. After garlanding a portrait of the Mahatma, the participants recited bhajans and remembered the Father of the Nation.
The Sarvodaya International Trust, Jammu and Kashmir Chapter and, students, staff of Government Middle School Gharana, RS Pura and the panchayat members paid homage to Father of the Nation on his Martyrdom day. On the occasion, two minutes silence was observed by all at 11.00 a.m. in the memory of those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for India’s freedom.
The school children highlighted the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and resolved to serve the society. Members of the Saryodaya International Trust Professor G. M. Bhat, Ravinder Singh, Dr. Bhutyal, Dr. Harish Chander, Monika Jamwal, Meera Sharma and Head Master, Yash Pal interacted with the students and advised them to get involved in saving the natural environment – soil, water and air for sustenance of the society.
Former Minister and Member AICC Abdul Gani Vakil recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s contributions in achievement of freedom from the colonial yoke, his sustained campaign against social injustice, racism and suppression of the under-privileged sections. Mr. Vakil was paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi at a function organized by Indian National Trade Union Congress at Jammu.
MLA Chenani Krishan Chander Bhagat paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi during a public function, which was attended by several Congress leaders. In his address, the MLA highlighted contribution of the Father of the Nation to the world and stressed that every citizen should follow his principles to make the country strong. Others who spoke on the occasion, included Aman Gupta, Vijay Manhas, Des Raj Prasher, Master Jagan Nath, Gotam Sharma Sarpanch and Dev Raj.
Aman Kalsotra, a social activist & director of Sky High India Social Organisation, paid tributes to the Father of the Nation in presence of all the members of the organisation.
Speaking on the occasion Aman Kalsotra highlighted contributions of Mahatma Gandhi and stressed that every citizen should follow his principles to make the world a beautiful place for all races
Reports from Doda said that workers of District Congress Seva Dal paid homage and remembered the Father of Nation by organizing a simple function at block Bhaderwah under the chairmanship of Surinder Singh Manhas. On the occasion, a two-minute silence was also observed. Those who attend the function included Azad Hussain Rajesh Kotwal Uttam Singh Mohd Farooq Haditu llah Shiekh, Radha Krishan Kuldeep Kumar Rattan Lal, Sanjay Kumar and others.
District Congress Committee Udhampur also organized a tribute paying function under the chairmanship of Ashok Bakshi. Speakers on the occasion threw light on teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. Those who paid tributes to the Mahatma, included Om Parkash, Vijay Padha, Rassal Singh, Sunil Badyal, Om Parkash Dogra, Suram Chand, Charan Dass, Shounku Ram, Makhan Lal, Jasvir Kour, Neelam Devi, Satya Devi, Rattan Chand and others.
A function was organized at Janipur (Jammu West Assembly constituency) by the social activists Pawan Kumar and Sunil Kumar to pay tributes to Mahatama Gandhi on his death an niversary. Maheshwar Singh Manhas, Senior Congress leader was the chief guest and he paid floral tributes to Father of the Nation.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Manhas threw light on the life and teachings of Mahatama Gandhi. “In the present era, the teachings of Mahatama Gandhi have more relevant. The real tribute to great leader would be if we follow his footsteps and work for maintaining peace in the State”, he said.
In a separate function by youth leaders of district Congress Committee, Udhampur, rich tributes were paid to Mahatma Gandhi. Speakers, on the occasion, stressed the need to strengthen the values of Mahatma Gandhi for peace in entire world. Those who attended the function and paid tributes to the Father of Nation, included Sham Lal Samnotra, Taro Devi, Girdhari Lal Basnotra, Shivam Sharma, Sumeet Mangotra and others.
Gandhi Global Family district unit organised a simple function at Kishtwar and paid rich tribute to the Father of Nation on his 65th death anniversary.
Speaking on the occasion, several Gandhians termed the philosophy of the Mahatma as only way to lead a life of peace and dignity. Among the prominent who attended the function, includes, Ghulam Mohammad Ganie, Isher Chand, Karam Chand, Abdul Latief Chobdar, Dev, Raj Sharma, Zaffar Ali Doolwal, Mohammad Iqbal, Ali Mohammad Mir,
Rinku Kotwal, Nazir Ahmed Sheikh, Sunil Sharma and Sarpanch Ghulam Mohammad.
