Tunnel Boring Machine launched successfully for Pakal Dul Project

KISHTWAR, July 25: In a remarkable stride towards the accelerated development of Pakal Dul Hydroelectric (HE) Project (1000 MW), a joint venture of NHPC and JKSPDC, known as CVPPL, a momentous achievement was accomplished with the successful launch of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)-1 for the construction of Head Race Tunnel-1 here today.
The launch of TBM was executed with precision and excellence in the presence of dignitaries including Hasan Nadeem, Managing Director CVPPL; Varunjeet Charak, Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Kishtwar; Sandeep Mittal, General Manager (HQ) CVPPL; Ramesh Mukhiya, General Manager-Hydro Operation Planning, Pakal Dul HE Project and other senior officials from CVPPL and TBM contractor M/s L&T Ltd.
The Pakal Dul HE Project is a landmark initiative and the construction of Head Race Tunnel-1 is a critical component of this venture. The twin Head Race Tunnels, measuring 9.6 km in length and 8.33 m in excavated diameter, will significantly contribute to the generation of 1000 MW of hydroelectric power.
Two state-of-the-art Double Shield TBMs, named Marsu and Aksini are engaged in the construction, boasting the most advanced technology manufactured by M/s Herrenknecht, Germany.
These cutting-edge TBMs have been specially designed to tackle the site’s unique geological conditions and facilitate simultaneous boring and segment lining.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Devansh Yadav, Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar emphasized on the importance of continuing the work with unwavering zeal and enthusiasm to ensure the project’s scheduled completion, contributing to the overall development and prosperity of Kishtwar District.
