Two-day conference of AILU concludes

JAMMU, May 7: The two day conference of J&K unit of All India Lawyers’ Union (AILU) concluded today with the union members expressing need for constitution of National Judicial Commission to maintain transparency, accountability and independency in judiciary.
The conference started yesterday with a seminar on the topics “Significance of Words–Socialism and Secularism, forming part of the Preamble of the Constitution of India” and “Constituting National Judicial Commission for appointment, transfer and removal of the members of Higher Judiciary”, in the conference hall of the newly constructed lawyers chambers building in Janipura Court Complex.
All India senior vice president of AILU, Joginder Singh Toor (from Chandigarh), inaugurated the conference. Hari Chand Jalmeria, general secretary of State unit, made key note address. Many lawyers and members of civil society participated in the seminar session.
Prominent among those who expressed their views in the seminar topics include Joginder Singh Toor and PV Surindranath, National vice presidents of AILU, Dr Vikram Singh Nain, convener, North Zone Council of AILU, Anil Chouhan, incharge, Popular Jurist magazine, BS Slathia, president, J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu and AK Sawhney, former president, Jammu Bar Association.
The speakers expressed concern that the incorporation of words ‘Secularism and Socialism’ in the Pre-amble of the Constitution of India through 42nd amendment in 1976, are losing their significance when actual practice of the state actors is going adverse. They also expressed concern over the growing mix up of religion and politics and growth of communal and fundamentalist forces which are posing serious threat to the unity and integrity of the country.
The need for constitution of National Judicial Commission was reiterated on the occasion by the speakers to maintain independent and effective judiciary and its transparency as well as accountability.
Meanwhile, the State unit also held its biennial elections and elected 31 members State Council, 15 members executive and office bearers.
HC Jalmeria was elected new president whereas Surinder Kour, Roop Lal and Khalid Mustaffa Bhatti were elected vice presidents, Sheikh Shakeel Ahmed was elected secretary. Surjeet Andotra, Dapesh Pawar, Amarvir Manhas and Arvind Jalmeria were elected joint secretaries, Babu Ram Manhas was elected treasurer while Pawan Kundal, Supria Chouhan and Monika Bhagat were made assistant secretaries.
