Two-day seminar on ‘Community Policing’ begins at SKPA Udhampur

UDHAMPUR, Aug 8: A two-day seminar on “Community Policing” commenced today at Sher-i-Kashmir Police Academy (SKPA) Udhampur.
The seminar was today attended by 10 officers of the rank of Police Sub-Inspectors (PSIs) from J&K Police. The training program is designed to cover key aspects of community policing, including an overview of community policing, enhancing police-community relationships for a better society and using counselling and mediation as tools for grievance redressal at police stations.
The program also emphasizes the role of police stations as the primary unit for developing community relations, the importance of community policing in the modern era and the fundamentals of public outreach. The Seminar features lectures by eminent guest faculty from SMVDU Katra and SKPA faculty.
At the inaugural function, Rajinder Kumar Gupta, SSP, Deputy Director (Indoor Training) was the chief guest. Gupta welcomed the participants on behalf of the Director of SKPA Udhampur. In his address, he highlighted that community policing facilitates the flow of information before crimes occur. He emphasized that the primary duty of a police officer is to serve society and the nation by maintaining continuous contact with the public, making it essential for police organizations to focus on community betterment.
Gupta also discussed the evolution of policing from its origins as a colonial tool to its current role as a means of enhancing citizen welfare in a democratic state. He reflected on how the transformation from a tool of control to one of community service underscores the importance of aligning police work with the principles of a welfare state.
The course is being coordinated by Rakesh Mani, assisted by ASI Rajinder Singh, a faculty member at SKPA Udhampur.
