Troops early this morning observed movement of a group of militants on the LoC from Chirkoot area of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and challenged them.
Heavy exchange of fire ensued between the two sides for about an hour in which two militants were killed. Troops didn’t suffer any casualties in the operation.
“Initially, body of one militant along with an AK rifle and ammunition was recovered from the site of gun battle which was right on the Line of Control,” sources said, adding the troops continued searches in the area and, in the evening, found one more body of the militant with weapon, ammunition and explosives.
“A total of two militants were killed in the encounter and the infiltration attempt was thwarted,” Defence spokesman Lt Col Devender Anand said.
Sources said bodies of both the militants have been recovered from the site of encounter but their identity couldn’t be established immediately.
However, both were foreign militants and intercepts suggest that one of them was top commander of the Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit. Besides two AK rifles, ammunition and explosives have also been recovered from the possession of slain militants.
“Killings of the militants show resolve of the Indian Army to thwart any misadventure along the Line of Control,” the Defence spokesman said.
A major catastrophe has been averted with the killing of top militants of the LeT outfit.
As per the sources, the militants had to take Pir Panjal mountains route to reach South Kashmir after their infiltration but their plot was successfully thwarted by the troops.
During past couple of months, Army has foiled three major intrusion bids by the militants along the Line of Control in Rajouri district.
Troops had killed three militants near the LoC in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district. In the operation, two Army soldiers were also martyred. One militant was eliminated in Nowshera.
Three freshly infiltrated militants were killed by security forces in Thannamandi area of Rajouri district. In this operation also, an Army soldier was martyred.
However, the militants had attacked house of the BJP leader in Rajouri town with a grenade in which two-year-old nephew of the leader was killed while seven family members were injured. The BJP leader was also among the injured.
Militants responsible for the grenade attack remained untraced so far.
