Two injured in clashes

Srinagar, Sept 1:  Two youth were injured as clashes broke out in old city areas of summer capital after Friday prayers.
Dozens of youth carrying flags and banners of militants took out a protest rally from Jama Masjid after culmination of Friday congregational prayers and marched upto Nowhatta square where they resorted to sloganeering. They later attempted to march towards Nowhatta police station but were intercepted by police after which clashes started between the two sides.
The police used teargas canisters against the stone-throwers who continued pelting stones. Due to clashes, panic spread in Nowhatta and adjoining markets as hundreds of people were busy in Eid shopping. Later, the youths dispersed and situation returned to normal. During clashes however two youths sustained minor injuries.
The clashes also erupted in Rajouri Kadal and Saraf Kadal areas of Old City. Police fired several teargas canisters to disperse the stone-pelters. The business and transport activities in these areas came to standstill for short span of time due to clashes. The youths later dispersed and situation returned to normal.
Meanwhile, police today detained Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Yasin Malik from his residence. A spokesman of the JKLF said Malik was detained by police from his Maisuma residence and taken to Central Jail along with his associate Bashir Ahmad.
