Two injured in firing range

JAMMU, May 24: Two persons were injured in firing range of the Army at Kaleeth in Akhnoor tehsil this afternoon while the Border Security Force (BSF) today repatriated a woman to Pakistani Rangers after she had inadvertently crossed into this side from the International Border (IB) in Ramgarh sector of Samba district.
Police have registered a case against a BSF jawan, who had opened firing in drunk condition at village Dera in Arnia sector last night.
Official reports said two civilians were hit by bullets and splinters in Kaleeth Army firing range in Akhnoor, where they had gone to collect scrap when troops of 4 Rashtriya Rifles from Doda were engaged in practice firing.
The injured civilians have been identified as Nek Ram son of Thoru Ram R/o Jad Brahamana and Swaran Dass son of Bishambar Dass R/o Jad Bhagtan.
Injured were shifted to Sub District Hospital in Akhnoor from where Nek Ram was referred to the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu.
Police said condition of both the injured was stated to be stable and they were responding to the treatment.
Meanwhile, BSF 59 battalion today apprehended a 42 years old Pakistani woman near Kamor forward post in Ramgarh sector of Samba district along the International Border (IB).
She disclosed her identity as Irshad Begum wife of Liyaqat Ali R/o Gujranwala.
Reports said the woman appeared to be mentally deranged and was carrying Rs 381 in Pakistan currency, some rice and flour at the time of arrest. The BSF established the casual contact with the Rangers and repatriated the woman to them this evening.
Reports said the woman, who appeared to be beggar and mentally unsound, had inadvertently reached the IB. She was repatriated as goodwill gesture.
Meanwhile, a BSF jawan Naresh Kumar of 122 battalion, deployed at Sangral Post in Arnia sector, last night moved towards village Dera and opened firing on ground with his official weapon.
Reports said the bullet bounced and his the BSF jawan causing him injuries. The jawan appeared to be drunk at the time of firing.
BSF officers and police teams later reached the spot. The BSF officials have questioned the jawan. Police said they have registered a case against the BSF jawan at RS Pura police station for further investigations.
