SRINAGAR : Two militants were killed as security forces resumed operation in frontier district of Kupwara and south Kashmir district of Pulwama with the first light this morning, a defence ministry spokesman said. We have so far killed one militant each in Pulwama and Kupwara, Col N N Joshi said adding the operation was going on.
Operations at Dardpora Kupwara and Gadoora were launched yesterday following a tip-off about the presence of militants. Massive search operation by security forces was also going on at Dardpora in Lolab in the frontier district of Kupwara, where a brief encounter took place when security forces were sealing the area following a tip-off about the presence of militants yesterday afternoon.
Col Joshi said a fresh exchange of fire took place between security forces and militants holed up there early this morning, they said that adding an unidentified militant was killed.
The operation was going on when the reports last came in. He said a local Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant identified as Bilal Ahmad Bhat was so far killed in Gadoora Pulwama.
The operation, which was suspended last night due to darkness, was resumed at village Gadoora in Pulwama. He said the operation was going on when the reports last came in.
A local militant was killed in the encounter so far and one or two militants are still reportedly trapped in the cordoned off area. Meanwhile, authorities have imposed curfew like restriction in Gadoora and adjoining areas to prevent any demonstration.
Immediately after the encounter ensued last night, people of the area took to streets raising pro freedom slogans. Security forces had to burst teargas shells to disperse the demonstrators who were trying to march towards the encounter site. (AGENCIES)
