Two teenagers jump into Chenab, rescued

JAMMU, Oct 17: Two teenaged girls, students of MHAC Nagbani today jumped into Chenab river after school timing in Akhnoor.
As per police sources, at around 1515 hours two girls, students of Nagbani School namely Kirti Sandhu (9th Class), daughter of Baldev Raj, a resident of Sant Nagar, Jammu and Sonali (8th class), daughter of Jugal Kishore, a resident of Lower Roop Nagar, Jammu after school timing hired an auto-rickshaw and reached Jammu-Poonch Highway, from where they boarded an Akhnoor bound bus and de-boarded near steel bridge on Chenab river at Akhnoor.
While roaming around the bridge, the girls called one of their friends and informed her that they are committing suicide. Her friend informed the teacher, who made a call to Police Control Room (PCR) and informed about the extreme step to be taken by the girls.
After getting information from PCR, police team from Akhnoor police station rushed to the spot, but by that time, the girls had jumped into the river.
However, they were rescued by the police and locals sitting along the river bank.
The girls were shifted to the Sub-District Hospital (SDH), Akhnoor and their parents were informed, who also reached the hospital.
After getting treated at SDH Akhnoor, both the girls were discharged and handed over to family members.
When contacted, SDPO Naresh Singh said that girls have been brought to the Akhnoor police station, where police is trying to ascertain the reason behind this extreme step by them.
“We have called their parents and school teachers, but these girls are yet to disclose why they attempted to commit suicide”, he added.
