Udhampur town water supply augmented by 5 lakh gallons

UDHAMPUR, Mar 12: In a major boost to water supply in Udhampur town, the PHE Department has revamped the Salmey old filtration plant resulting into the additional supply of 5 lakh gallons filtered per day to the inhabitants of town which will be a great relief for summer.
Executive Engineer PHE Rajesh Gupta accomplished this task under supervision of District Development Commissioner, Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary. Raw water pumps of 1 lakh galloon capacity and 5 pumps of 50000 gallons were installed, resulting into the addition of 5 lakh gallons filtered water per day by revamping old filtration plant and 7 lakh gallon per day by plugging the leakages of Sump tank.
The work for revamping of old filtration plant was completed in 22 days, for improvement of existing water supply system of Udhampur town. The augmentation of water supply has been done after a period of 6 years as previously the enhancement was acheivd under UIDSSMT Project.
It was proposed to construct a filtration plant with capacity of 1 lakh GPH along the other allied works for augmentation of 16 lakh gallons of water lifting from river Tawi at Salmay. The work was started in year 2007-08 and 16 lakh gallons filtered water added to the existing available water, thus raising the availability up to 38.61 LGPD which is almost catering the present requirement of water in Udhampur town.
The work on the project was delayed due to requisite NOCs and change in requirement to be reflected in the DPRs. Matter was also raised in the meetings of District Development Board. The matter regarding wastage of water at stage 1st Salmay due to leakages in sump tank and filtration plant came in the notice of department and district administration in August 2015.
Subsequently, a committee was constituted to access the quantum of wastage/loss of filtered water at filtration plant site. The committee recommended augmentation, plugging of leakages and enhancing capacity.
It is pertinent to mention that one of the beds of old filtration plant with 25000 glns per hours capacity was lying defunct. Tenders were floated and work allotted for early completion. The work for plugging of leakages of 1.00 lacs glns sump tank has been completed and revamping of old filtration plant work is in progress. In addition laying of 250mm dia MS pipe 500mtr  by replacing existing 150mm dia C.I pipe for improving water  supply to upper Gangera, Gangera, Housing Colony, Indra Colony, DC Office, Shiv Nagar and Mohra Kathiala is being taken up.
The DDC during spot visit directed for early completion of approach road and asked revenue authorities for redressing land issues and RDD for protection work.
