JAMMU, Mar 9: Three-week UGC Refresher Course in Library and Information Science, organized by Academic Staff College of Jammu University, concluded here today.
Twenty three Assistant Librarians and College Librarians from universities and colleges across the State attended the course during which around 30 Resource Persons from different parts of India delivered the lectures.
Prof I A Hamal, Vice-Chancellor, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri, was the chief guest in the valedictory function. He said that libraries play a pivotal role in the dissemination of knowledge and information and are an important element of the foundation of knowledge economy. He also expressed his concern over a sharp decline in reading habits among students and faculty.
He emphasized that it is the prerogative of library professionals to organize awareness / orientation programmes for promoting reading habits and utilization of freely available online resources over internet. He added that librarians must keep themselves updated in their respective field to disseminate knowledge.
Prof Sangeeta Gupta, Head Department of LIS and course coordinator of the programme, presented brief proceedings of the whole programme on day to day basis.
Prof Rajender Gupta, Director ASC highlighted importance of UGC refresher courses for teachers and library professionals. He apprised participants that upgrading skills and continuous learning is an essential component to remain relevant in knowledge society and role of library professionals is significant in this regard.
Earlier, Parmod K Singh, Asstt Prof of DLIS read the welcome address and various participants shared their experiences and presented feedback report of the course.
Later, Ranjit Kalra, Assistant Director, ASC, presented formal vote of thanks.
