UK envoy arrest: Foreign Sec Raab condemns Iran’s action

LONDON, Jan 12: UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Dominic Raab on Sunday condemned Ambassador Rob Macaire’s brief detention in Tehran, calling it a violation of the international law.

“The arrest of our Ambassador in Tehran without grounds or explanation is a flagrant violation of international law. The Iranian government is at a cross-roads moment”, Raab said in a statement.

He further said that the Iran can continue its march towards pariah status with all the political and economic isolation that entails, or take steps to deescalate tensions and engage in a diplomatic path forwards.

Earlier, Macaire was arrested for several hours for organizing and participating in protests on Saturday evening in the Iranian capital.
