LONDON, Dec 20: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will appoint former EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson as London’s new ambassador to the US, The Times has reported, citing sources.
Mandelson, 71, has experience in trade and networking, which is expected to serve well to improve the US-UK ties, the sources said.
He has reportedly been picked over other candidates, such as former Foreign Secretary David Miliband and ex-EU policy chief Catherine Ashton.
During his political career, the ambassador-to-be has held several important government positions, including business secretary and effective deputy prime minister under ex-UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and European commissioner for trade from 2004 to 2008.
Current UK Ambassador to Washington Karen Pierce will remain in office until the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on January 20.
In early December, Trump nominated “one of the most successful businessmen” in the US Warren Stephens as Washington’s new ambassador to the UK.
