Woman among 2 die, DDC member infected

JAMMU, Dec 29: Two persons including a woman died of COVID-19 in Jammu region today while brother of a Corona positive youth from Roop Nagar, who had returned from the United Kingdom, today also tested positive for the virus but his parents reported negative.
A 31-year-old youth from Roop Nagar on the outskirts of Jammu City had reported positive for the Coronavirus three days back when he was subjected to testing on return from UK. His family was sampled for Coronavirus during which his younger brother tested positive today while parents were negative for COVID.
GMC Jammu Principal Dr Shashi Sudhan said sample of the UK returnee has been sent to National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) New Delhi for testing for ‘Mutant COVID Strain’, which has spread in UK.
However, she added, the report is awaited.
Sample of the UK returnee’s brother will be sent for testing to NCDC New Delhi only if his elder brother tests positive for new virus, Dr Sudhan said.
Both the brothers have been isolated in Gandhi Nagar hospital.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Imran Zaffar, newly elected member of the District Development Council (DDC) from Mankote constituency in Poonch district has tested positive for pathogen.
Significantly, he had taken oath yesterday along with 13 other members in which Deputy Commissioner Poonch Rahul Yadav and other officials were also present.
Meanwhile, of two COVID deaths in Jammu region, one each was reported from Reasi and Doda districts today.
A 63-year-old man from village Mari Gran Morh in Reasi district and 70-year-old woman from Bhalla in Bhaderwah tehsil of Doda district succumbed to COVID-19.
With these two deaths, Jammu region’s Corona toll has gone up to 694, the highest being 354 in Jammu district followed by 63 Doda, 57 Udhampur, 54 Rajouri, 48 Kathua, 38 Samba, 23 Poonch, 21 each Kishtwar and Ramban districts and 15 in Reasi district.
Among 103 persons, who tested positive for the virus in Jammu region, 65 hailed from Jammu district and 11 Kathua. Rest of the districts reported positive cases in single digits including seven in Ramban, five each Udhampur and Rajouri, three each Doda, Samba and Poonch and one in Reasi district. However, no positive cases were reported from Kishtwar.
Of 159 persons, who recovered from the virus, 84 were from Jammu district, 24 Samba, 14 Udhampur, 13 Rajouri, 11 Doda, eight Kishtwar and five in Kathua district. No recoveries were reported from Poonch, Ramban and Reasi districts.
Jammu region now has 49727 Corona cases including 1519 active positives while 47514 have recovered from the virus. There have been 694 casualties.
Meanwhile, the UT of Ladakh today reported 25 new COVID positive cases, all in Leh district.
With fresh cases, Ladakh’s Corona count has reached 9436. Of them, 210 are active while 9099 have recovered. There have been 127 casualties in the UT.
