‘UMEED’ Scheme transforms lives of Safapora women artisans

Srinagar, Oct 31: The Government’s assistance to a group of ten women engaged in the traditional art of ‘Tilla Work’ in Ganderbal district has brought a profound transformation in their lives, enabling them to become self-reliant and support their families.
The Self-Help Group, based in the Safapora area of the district, has received vital backing from the authorities under the UMEED Scheme. Through this program, the group has been granted the necessary financial assistance required to continue their craft and expand their team of artisans, ultimately securing their livelihoods.
Sakeena, a dedicated member of the group residing in Safapora, shared her experience since joining the initiative. She expressed how, since becoming a part of the group, she has been able to earn a decent livelihood, granting her self-reliance.
She elaborated, “Aside from the assistance provided by the authorities, our group also offers loans when needed, which we repay as soon as possible. Simultaneously, our earnings have increased, allowing us to support our dependents.”
The artisan went on to mention that she has been associated with the group for the past five years, highlighting the hassle-free loan process that enables them to provide livelihood opportunities to more individuals.
The women artisans in the group specialize in ‘Tilla’ work, applying their craftsmanship to a wide range of articles, including pherans, shawls, suits, and luxurious pashmina shawls. Their creations have become highly sought-after, selling like hotcakes in the market.
What makes this group unique is the diversity among its members, including highly educated individuals, some of whom hold graduate and post-graduate degrees.
They emphasize that they efficiently balance their responsibilities, completing household chores before dedicating time to their craft. This flexibility allows them to thrive without encountering significant challenges.
Sumaiya, another member of the group residing in the same area, shed light on their distinctive embroidery work. She explained that their creations set them apart, captivating customers with their unique appeal.
“One notable aspect of our work is the Tilla work on pashmina shawls, which already feature exquisite sozni work. These articles are truly a delight to wear and behold,” she exclaimed.
