Under-trial held after escape from jail

JAMMU, Nov 27: An under-trial in a murder case, who had escaped from District Jail Kathua on August 22 this year, has been re-arrested by police from village Hatmaska in Basohli tehsil of Kathua district when he was trying to cross over to Himachal Pradesh.
Sohan Singh alias Akri, 26, son of Joginder Singh, a resident of Palekh, Basohli, had dodged the jail authorities by jumping out of the window of the jailer’s quarter, then scaling a tree and moving out of the jail on August 22 morning.
He used to milk cow of the jailer in his official quarter when he got an opportunity to move out.
Additional DG (Prisons) Naveen Aggarwal said the accused was arrested from village Hatmaska by the police when he was trying to enter the State from Himachal Pradesh border. He said the accused had stayed in New Delhi and Rajasthan and worked as a conductor after his escape from the jail.
Mr Aggarwal had already ordered a high level inquiry into escape of the prisoner.
He said the questioning of the accused would give clues as to whether there was any inside involvement in his escape.
Police had registered a fresh case against Akri for escape from the jail. Akri was facing charges of murder under Section 302 and 201/34 RPC in FIR No. 58/2008 at Basohli police station.
