‘Understanding rapists’ by Mr R S Jamwal(DE dated 23rd Feb2013) is a brief, but to the point study carried out by the author to analyze some of the real causes which lead to committing rape. He has rightly pointed out that harsher laws including death sentence cannot in anyway help in eradicating this evil.
Had it been so ,Afghanistan and the likes would have succeeded in vanishing rapes from their country long back, but in ground reality itis not so . It is always better to educate the people and let them understand moral values than punishing them, this doesnot in anyway mean that punishment can totally be done away with, but could be avoided in many cases depending upon the merit of the case.
Even the existing laws are sufficient to deal with rape and crime against women, if implemented properly ,but the implementing agencies like Police,CBI ,women cells etc have not been very successful in getting rid of crime against women, and cannot be expected to perform better even under the ambit of harsher laws, because the officials responsible for apprehending the criminals are also human beings of this mortal world, which is infected with corruption to the gross root level. You cannot expect them to be ideally sincere and honest not tempted by allurements , money and influence .
Moreover like other laws these harsher laws could be misused by biased women alleging fake rape or molestation on their rival friends or competitors in their work places.Section 498A Dowery demand and domestic violence are among the most misused sections of IPC(or RPC).
In para 4 of the article under reference, the author has pointed out an important cause the ‘lust’ or Trishna which is the outcome of Tamasic Vritti, and to some extent by Rajasic Vritti .( Lord Krishna has pointed out in detail about Satvic, Rajasic and Tamasic vritties and their causes at large in Bhagvad Gita)(chapter 14:5-18)
If we know the real cause of a crime then it would be easy to find out the solution also. Tamasic Vritti is caused by three factors i.e.
1) diet: eating non stimulating foods(avoiding alcohol, drugs and spices),
2) thinking positively, and
3) environment which includes exposureto obscene literature and movies, wearing transparent dresses which reveal the anatomy of the body to the extreme extent, especially in fair sex .Present day ads are also the source of such sexual stimulations .
Tamasic and Rajasic Vritti can be transformed into Satvic Vritti by Spiritual upliftment through moral education. Yoga involving seven out of eight steps i.e. 1)Yama (5 rules for a good society I.e. Ahimsa; not troubling others through our actions and deeds. Satya; always following the path of truth. Astaiya;not stealing others wealth and belongings.Brahmchariya; no extramarital sex.,Aparigreha;non accumulation of wealth and property beyond need. 2)Niyama (5 rules for self development like: Shocha; external cleansing and internal purification, Tapa :control of mind and body, Santosha : contentment, and Ishvara Pranidhan; remembering God while doing all our
duties,3)Aasana :yogic postures or exercises for keeping fit mentally as well as physically.4) Pranayama :control of breathing process which would in turn control our mind,
5) Pratiyahara : controlling our mind and body leading to the right direction. 6) Dharna; concentration and
7) Dhyana: medtation ;the sole method of overcoming stress and strain leading to ultimate union of soul with God .First seven steps can be followed by all Grehasties and are the solution to all these problems. Samadhi the eighth step is for Sanyasins only.
If moral education and Yoga are introduced mandatorily in schools and colleges and even in government offices, our younger generation would certainly be transformed morally as well as spiritually and would be an important step in eradicating crime in the long run including rape, molestation and crime against women.
