United Spirits enhances premium Scotch whisky portfolio

NEW DELHI, Aug 15: With an eye on further increasing its market share in the premium Scotch whisky segment, Vijay Mallya led United Spirits has enhanced its portfolio.
Announcing the launch of a luxury variant of Black Dog, United Spirits Ltd (USL) said in a statement that the launch “further strengthens its hold on the premium scotch segment in India.”
USL is the leader in the 12 YO (year-old) Scotch segment (Bottled In India) with highest market share, it added.
The new variant (Black Dog 21-Year-Old) will cost between Rs 12,000 and Rs 16,500 depending on state pricing policies.
The company’s President and Managing Director Ashok Capoor said: “Premium brands contribute 55 per cent of USL’s contribution pie, with this number likely to increase to 60 per cent by the end of this year”.
Last year, USL had launched Black Dog 18 YO in the Indian market.
According to industry estimates, the total volume of BII (Bottled In India) scotch segment in India is around 1.14 million cases per annum.
The scotch segment in India grew by 22 per cent in 2011-12 fiscal while USL scotch brands grew by 29 per cent in the same period, the company said.
USL sells various liquor brands including McDowell’s No1, Signature and Royal Challenge in the country. (PTI)
