JAMMU, Mar 22: Various universities and colleges across Jammu and Kashmir organized events to spread awareness on the importance of conserving water. The theme for World Water Day 2023 was “Accelerating the Change to Solve the Water and Sanitation Crisis”.
A seminar was organised at Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu which was attended by a large number of engineers and hydrologists from various department and organisations.
On the occasion, Mohinder Angurala, Senior Hydrologist, Central Ground Water Board, J&K was the chief guest while Prof Bhawna Sharma, chairperson, IEI, Jammu centre presided over the function.
In her address, Prof Bhawna Sharma said that the objective of the seminar is to raise awareness and inspire action to tackle the water and sanitation crisis, thereby achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of water and sanitation for all by 2030.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest, Mohinder Angurala said, “from drinking to cleaning and other purposes, life cannot sustain without water.”
“While many people are privileged to have running water 24×7, there is a huge population around the globe that doesn’t have access to any amount of water,” he said.
He said that around 1.4 million people died annually and 74 million will have their lives shortened by diseases related to poor water, sanitation and hygiene.
At Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) in Rajouri, a special lecture was delivered by Professor Bhawana Pathak, Former Head and Dean, School of Environment and Sustainable development, Central University of Gujarat.
Professor Pathak spoke about the management and monitoring of waste water and the importance of altering the way people use and manage water in their daily lives to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 6, which is water and sanitation for all by 2030.
Prof Akbar Masood, Vice-Chancellor of BGSBU in his message emphasized that the World Water Day, is held every year to raise awareness and inspire action to tackle the water crisis.
The Department of Environmental Sciences, Ecoclub, Youth Club and NSS units of Government SPMR College of Commerce Jammu organized various events, including group discussion, awareness rallies, slogan writing, and poster making competitions to raise awareness on water conservation.
Dr Surinder Kumar, Principal of the college, talked about water wastage and pollution which leads to water shortage. He motivated the students to take positive steps to conserve water.
Merit Certificates were given to the students who participated in the program.
The Environmental Club in collaboration with Teachers’ Club of Dogra College of Education organized a rally and awareness lecture on the importance of conserving water for the present and future generations on planet Earth.
Approximately 50 students, teachers and local people participated in the rally as they carried placards and banners for spreading the awareness on saving water for the present and future generations on planet Earth. On this occasion, awareness lectures were also delivered by the college staff and students.
Government Degree College Sidhra organized an awareness quiz to celebrate the World Water Day as a part of G20 activities.
The theme of the quiz competition participated by 60 students was “Accelerating the change to solve the water and sanitation crisis” which is also the theme of this year’s Water Day.
Principal of the college, Dr B B Anand congratulated the student participants for their participation in the event with full enthusiasm.
Government Degree College Ukhral also organised a seminar on the theme, “Accelerating the Change to Solve the Water and Sanitation Crises”, on the occasion of World Water Day.
The seminar was organized with the purpose to aware the common masses in general and students in particular about the importance of water in human life and its conservation.
Prof Zakir Hussain Naik, HoD Political Science, presented the formal welcome address and briefed that audience about the aim of organizing this one-day seminar.
In his address, chief guest Major Hanspal, appreciated the efforts of college administration for organising the seminar on a very crucial and important theme.
Principal of the College, Dr Ashok Kumar also emphasized about the water conservation and exhorted upon the students to aware the common masses about the various means and methods of water conservation.
A poster making competition on “Clean Water and Sanitation” was also organised by the Institution Innovation Cell of Government College of Engineering (GCOE) today.
Principal of the College, Prof Aekta Gupta appreciated the efforts of student volunteers and encouraged them to conserve water. Dr Shalini Sharma, Convenor, Nature Club highlighted the importance of sanitation and preserving clean water.
