Unplanned widening of National Highway

‘Excelsior’ in its edition of May 15 , through these columns, had voiced due concern over recurring loss of lives on the road stretch in Ramban sector on the National Highway and enumerated various reasons of frequent landslides, disruption of traffic and more importantly, loss of precious lives. Why should the contractors and their associate sub- contractors undertaking the widening of the road in this fragile sector, not be held responsible and necessary FIRs registered against them taken to logical conclusions ? Only in December 2019 a top official of the CPRF and his driver lost their lives when a huge boulder came rolling down on their vehicle while passing through the particular patch of the road in this sector.
Let this sector not earn the nickname of a death trap road which of late, is due to digging and widening process undertaken in a haphazard , non technical and quite ordinary manner disregarding the peculiar limitations of the fragile geological mountainous area where shooting stones and falling boulders are a routine on daily basis. Ramban District Administration is found wanting in discharging its duties and obligations in ensuring due precautions were taken by the construction company . Directions of the Lt. Governor and the UT Chief Secretary need to be heeded to and implemented.
