UNSC adopts resolution extending panel of experts on Sudan for another yr

UNITED NATIONS, Mar 9: The United Nations Security Council members adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the Panel of Experts helping the Sudan Sanctions Committee for another year, the correspondent reported on Friday.
The Council members adopted the extension with 13 votes in favour and one abstention, while one of the abstinent was Russia.
The Deputy Russian Permanent Representative Anna Evstigneeva said Russia abstained due to the excessive human rights aspects and overlapping content of another resolution on Sudan, which we adopted earlier today, calling for a ceasefire during the Ramadan holiday.
She also added that some points of the resolution might seem like the power of the panel has been extended, but that is not the case.
The UN Panel of Experts on Sudan was created by the UN Security Council in 2005, and its main task is to monitor the arms embargo in Darfur. (UNI)
