Upcoming Municipal and Panchayat elections

The upcoming Municipal and Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir are to be the largest electoral exercise in the Union Territory. The number of wards in all 78 Urban Local bodies and the number of Municipal Corporations and Committees will remain the same, as no new areas have been included. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and the UT administration are making preparations to conduct the elections in October or November, following the completion of their five-year terms. As the terms of all three tiers of the Panchayati Raj system in Jammu and Kashmir are coming to an end, the process of elections will begin once the State Election Commission (SEC) is constituted.
The present Government must be credited for its efforts in establishing and operationalizing all three tiers of the Panchayati Raj system. All these institutions play a crucial role, especially in the absence of an elected legislative assembly. The functioning of Panchayats, Municipal Corporations, and Municipal Councils demonstrates a collaborative approach between the people and the administration to promote development at the grassroots level. The support provided by the Central Government, both financially and otherwise, has significantly contributed to the progress and development of the region. The tangible outcomes of these efforts are visible and have resulted in positive outcomes that benefit everyone.
Almost eighty-five lakh voters will exercise their rights to ensure the effective functioning of these institutions and the positive impact they have on the overall development of Jammu and Kashmir. Such local governance structures empower communities and ensure that the needs and aspirations of the people are effectively addressed.
