NEW DELHI, Aug 2: As of today, the upper age limit for appearing in IAS / Civil Services Examination (CSE) is 32 years. However, this upper age limit is relaxable in case of the reserved category candidates.
In reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh stated that the upper age limit for competitive examinations conducted by UPSC / SSC is determined on the basis of DoPT (Department of Personnel & Training) guidelines and thereby, the upper age limit, as on 1st August 2018, for Civil Services Examination is 32 years. It was further stated that this rule is equally applicable to all the candidates and therefore, the question of being unfair to any candidate does not arise.
In reply to another question, Dr Jitendra Singh informed that in the context of litigation spending in the court, DoPT, following the directions of the Supreme Court issued on May 17, 2018, has requested all the Ministries / Departments in the Government of India to carry out promotions based on existing seniority / selection lists, subject to further orders which may be passed by the Supreme Court. The State Governments have also been advised to take necessary action in accordance with the orders passed by the Supreme Court.
Pertinent to mention that the Supreme Court of India had, in response to a Special Leave Petition passed an order on 17th of May 2018, directed that the pendency of this SLP shall not stand in the way of the Union of India taking steps for the purpose of promotion in “Reserved to Reserved” and “Unreserved to Unreserved” and also in the matter of “promotion on merit”. This order paves the way for clearing a huge backlog of promotions in all categories of Government Officials, which has been pending for a long time on account of the matter being sub-judice. As per the practice, the respective cadre controlling authorities carry out promotions and the data about the persons promoted, etc. is maintained by them.
