US acting defence secretary, NATO chief discuss alleged INF treaty violations – Pentagon

WASHINGTON, Jan 29: US Acting Secretary of Defence Patrick Shanahan and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a meeting in Washington discussed Russia’s alleged violations of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, Acting Chief Pentagon Spokesperson Charles Summers said in a press release. “The leaders discussed a broad range of defence issues, including burden sharing, NATO force readiness, the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, and Russia’s ongoing violation of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty,” Summers said on Monday. The United States has repeatedly accused Moscow of INF treaty violations. In particular, US officials have voiced concern over Russia’s 9M729 missile, which, according to Washington, violates the provisions of the nuclear treaty.
Russia has refuted allegations of being in breach of the agreement and complained that launchers on US defence systems in Europe are capable of firing cruise missiles at ranges banned by the INF accord.
