US envoys meet Rana, discuss matters of mutual interest

JAMMU, Dec 2: Provincial President National Conference Devender Singh Rana today said that the dispensation led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is on path of consolidating the strong edifice laid during the past nearly five years in Jammu and Kashmir.
At a breakfast meeting with Chad A Thornberry, First Secretary (Political) Embassy of the United States of America in India here this morning, the Provincial President gave an overview of the situation with special reference to the developmental initiative set in motion to steer the State out of the morass.
The First Secretary was accompanied by Damian F Murphy, Senior Professional Staff Member, Committee on Foreign Relations, US Senate and Maria Antonieta Trejo from Bureau of Legislative Affairs, Department of State.
“The turnaround in the situation has been possible mainly because of the people’s deep yearning for peace and their faith in the Government that worked with a sincerity of purpose to ensure peaceful and congenial atmosphere across the State, especially in the Kashmir valley”, Mr Rana said, adding that the challenges are not yet over. “These are to be met with fortitude”, he maintained.
Mr Rana dwelt on the initiatives taken to ensure inclusive development in three regions of the State, enlist people’s involvement in decision making through the mechanism of Panchayats, enforcing administrative accountability by empowering people through revolutionary legislations of Right to Information and Public Services Guarantee Acts.
The Provincial President and the visiting US team discussed volley of subjects including Indo-Pak and Indo-Sino relations, need for engagement with Islamabad for normalizing relations, the latest situation prevailing in Afghanistan besides the matters of mutual interest in the field of education, health and the various other public utility services.
