US hopes Pakistan resolves political row

WASHINGTON, Apr 27: he US has expressed hope that Pakistan would resolve a row centred on Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in a just and transparent way and described it as an internal matter of the country.
“We do consider this an internal matter, and we expect that Pakistan is going to resolve these kinds of issues in a just way, in a transparent way, and in a way that upholds Pakistani laws and its constitution,” the State Department spokesperson, Victoria Nuland, told reporters at her daily news conference.
Pakistan’s Supreme Court yesterday found Gilani guilty of contempt over his refusal to obey an order to write to the authorities in Switzerland to ask them to restart corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
Nuland refused to comment on the implications this verdict might have on the internal situation of Pakistan.
“I’m not going to speculate on the impact of an internal matter on a foreign policy matter, other than to say that we did have productive talks today and we think it’s important that we get back to our reengagement,” she said.
“We want to see it settle and we want to see it settled transparently,” Nuland said in response to a question. (PTI)
