Washington, Jan 12: US federal judge has ruled that the antitrust officials can continue to break up Meta, Facebook’s parent company, as the company had abused its dominance.
According to CNN report, the decision announced on Tuesday has allowed the federal prosecutors to try to prove their allegations that Meta has illegally abused a monopoly in the marketplace for social media ? and that its subsidiaries Instagram and WhatsApp should be spun off.
Earlier, the social media giant had argued that the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) revised antitrust complaint be dismissed.
In June last year, District Judge James Boasberg previously threw out the FTC’s complaint as the agency prosecutors had not done enough to show that Facebook held a monopoly in social networking.
Later in August, the FTC had re-filed its complaint.
According to CNN, Meta had urged Judge Boasberg to throw out the FTC suit on the grounds that vocal tech industry critic Lina Khan should not have been able to vote to approve the new complaint, given her past criticism of Big Tech companies.
