Use rice to feed people not to make sanitizers: IDPD to Govt

JAMMU, Apr 22: Condemning the Government’s proposal to make sanitizers from rice, Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) today emphasized the Government to use rice for feeding people and not making sanitizers.
“At a time when crores of people are going hungry without any food for days together, to talk of making sanitizers from rice instead of giving it to the poor and marginalized who do not have any ration card is ridiculous,” Dr SS Soodan (president, IDPD), Dr Arun Mitra (senior vice-president) and Dr Shakeel Ur Rahman (general secretary) said in a statement.
They said it is totally inhuman and unscientific as the food is the basic necessity to build immunity in a person to fight back any disease including COVID-19. “FCI godowns had a large stock of 309.76 lakh Metric Tonnes of Rice and 275.21 lakh Metric Tonnes of wheat as on March 2020 but this keeps on rotting because the Governments do not used them properly,” office bearers of IDPD said.
The IDPD doctors said that now when the new stock of Rabi crop is coming, the old stock should be open for universal public distribution so as to prevent hunger. Food stock should be given without any condition of ration or Aadhar card as with this condition many people will be left out, they emphasized.
“A large number of distress deaths are occurring as a result of stress arising out of loss of jobs, hunger, insecurity and unable to be with the family members. These can be prevented to an extent by giving free ration supply to all. The sanitizers are very expensive and out of reach of the common man,” they said, adding, poor in our country do not have soap or enough water supply to wash their hand then what to talk of purchasing sanitizers.
