Vaishno Devi Yatra

Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘Yatra crosses 7 million in 8 months’ DE Aug 24.
The above cited figures are mind-boggling and are indicators of popularity of this pilgrimage among the devotees throughout the length and breadth of the country. However, with the inflow of such large numbers, it also becomes important whether the pilgrims are looked after by the administration responsible for their welfare.
Time and again, it has been reported, that the pilgrims are fleeced by  shopkeepers and ponywallas. The gullible yatris are sold even small items at higher rates by taking full advantage of laxity on part of the law enforcing agencies. Though Government has fixed rates for ponywallas, for ferrying  pilgrims from base camp to the shrine, the pilgrims are charged more than that during rush hours  or by taking undue advantage of the innocence of pilgrims. The transporters particularly auto-rickshawallas too are involved in this unholy business.
The concerned authorities are requested to maintain a strict vigil over these activities and make the pilgrimage more popular.
Yours etc…..
Ajay Goswami
