Srinagar, Feb 26: First of its kind in J&K as well as in the country, a Kashmiri doctor has penned down a book on the Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)-also known as ‘Snoring’ in common parlance.
Dr Uzma Nazir, hailing from Nishat area of Srinagar, is an Orthodontist by profession who has penned down a 58 page book on the topic for the public awareness along with a few of her colleagues in the profession.
“I have basically written this book for public awareness as the problem of snoring is being taken as lightly, however, if we see, the OSA is responsible for so many health issues that might arise in the future,” she told Excelsior.
She said that on later stages, the snoring problem is potent to cause cardiac issues, respiratory, GIT problems including others.
“The patients seek medical attention only when such issues start to come to the fore. And I am telling you that the main reason for all these issues starts from snoring,” she said.
While saying that the people do know much about the issue, she said: “It is also potent to cause brain damage, because the sufficient amount of oxygenated blood does not reach the brain due to the obstructive breathing. It also causes forgetfulness, daytime sleepiness. It is a big issue about which the commoners do not know. It alters the body physiology.”
The doctor has put up the book free on cost online. “In order to aware public about the issue, I have formulated this e-book, which is available online free of cost.”
Giving out the structure of her e-book, she said that it (the book) details the physiology and how it is caused and also what the orthodontists can do in order to deal with such cases.
She has started writing the book in 2014 and finished writing it in 2018. Keeping the project to herself while she was writing it and even when it was published, the book came to surface recently after the things about it were put on the social media platforms.
Dr Uzma has been conferred with ‘Upcoming Healthcare Professional (Orthodontics) for the year 2019 by Time Cyber Media which confers such awards to the work of research carried out.
The author is planning to write another book on ‘Sleep Debt’ in days to come.
“When we do not sleep for the time which is required, there remains a debt on our body and that manifests in different ways in the future; it is also something which has remained untouched,” she said.
Dr Tasaduk Hussain Itoo, a medical doctor and an educationist who has read the book said that the book is well informative and easy to imbibe compilation and covers each and every aspect of OSA and the role of orthodontists in managing disorder.
