Srinagar, Jan 8: Joining the country-wide strike of workers and labours against the ill-policies of the Government, scores of workers belonging to various departments also held protest in Srinagar to press for their demands.
The workers assembled in the Press Enclave compound and raised slogans against the Government for what they termed as the exploitation of the labour class working in different capacities.
Among the protesters were the ASHA workers who had come from different areas of Kashmir. The workers said that they have not been given the pending wages so far.
“We have got pending wages that have not been given to us, plus, they should give us the status of workers; now that Jammu and Kashmir has become a Union Territory, we should be given the benefits like the workers are getting in other Union Territories,” said Mubeena, District President of ASHA Workers Union.
Around 8000 ASHA workers who are working across Kashmir are, as of now, getting peanuts on the name of the monthly salary. “We don’t want these wages, but a regular monthly income should be given to us,” she said.
Abdul Rehma Dar, who is working as a workers in the Horticulture Department said that the workers are protesting against the ill policies and anti-worker policies of the Government. “The Government is hell-bent on the non-resolution of the issues being confronted by the workers and due to which the condition of the working class has deteriorated”, he added.
While the situation of the workers in the country is not quite good, same is the case with the workers working in different capacities in various departments, “their condition is deplorable; you see what is the condition of contractual and the casual labourers in various departments,” he said.
