VC SKUAST-J for fusion of Statistical Sciences in Agricultural research

JAMMU, June 29: Professor J P Sharma, Vice Chancellor SKUAST- Jammu, today inaugurated two- day virtual workshop, organised by Division of Statistics and Computer Science to commemorate 128th birth anniversary of Late Prof Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis on National Statistics Day – 2021.
Dr P S Pandey, Assistant Director General (EP&HS) ICAR, New Delhi was the guest of honour on the occasion. This year theme of National Statistics Day is `Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)- 2 (End Hunger, Achieve Food Security and Improved Nutrition and Promote Sustainable Agriculture)’.
In his address, Professor Sharma said that Statistics is like salt in food. “Nobody realizes its importance when it is present. But everyone feels its importance when it is absent,” he explained and opined that the fusion of Statistical Sciences in Agricultural Sciences is very important.
“The role of experimental designs, statistical modeling, multivariate methods, economics techniques and data analytics is increasing day by day for more precision to assess the impact and to challenge the demand of the future in terms of policy and planning at regional and national level,” said Dr J P Sharma.
In his remarks, Dr P S Pandey, ADG (EP&HS), described statistics as a salt in glass of water indicating importance and strength of statistician. Dr Jag Paul Sharma, Director Research and Registrar, SKUAST-Jammu also spoke on the occasion.
Dr Manish Sharma, Prof & Head, Division of Statistics and Computer Science and Course Director of the workshop, spoke about National Statistics Day and also informed about the achievements of Late Prof Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.
Dr S E H Rizvi, Dean, FB Sc presented a welcome address. Dr M Iqbal Jeelani Bhat, Assistant Professor & Organizing Secretary presented the formal vote of thanks.
The workshop is being attended by scientist, faculty and scholars from all over the country. Dr Sachin Gupta and Dr Vivak M Arya conducted proceedings of the inaugural programme. Dr Rajan Salalia, Dr Devinder Sharma, Dr Anil Bhat, Dr Amrish Vaid, Dr Punit Choudhary and all the convener s, co-Conveners, members of the different committees helped in smooth conduct of the workshop on virtual platform.
